Fixed-point gauge serves as a reference point for the level of the free water surface of the open pan evaporimeter, which indicates or measures the order of magnitude of evaporation near the ground. The quantity of water lost by evaporation from the open pan during any given interval is measured by adding known quantity of water to the pan from a graduated cylinder till the water surface just touches the reference point of the fixed point gauge.
